The ARC Future Fibres Hub held its first strategy day on Wednesday 20 July at the Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University. Hub members including Chief Investigators, Partner Investigators and currently employed staff spent a productive day getting to know each other and celebrating the commencement of Hub activities.

Presentations from the Hub industry partners were very well received. Our partners work in diverse fields including developing the emerging short fibre industry (HeiQ Australia), carbon fibre composites (Carbon Revolution, Quickstep Automotive), cutting edge biomedical research (Ear Science Institute Australia) and protective apparel for motorcyclists (Draggin Jeans). Understanding their businesses and research priorities enables the team to identify how the Hub can help our partners address their research questions and strive for global excellence (part of the Hub mission).

Following morning tea it was the researchers’ turn with each Chief Investigator, and the CSIRO Partner Investigators, giving a short overview about themselves and their research interests. Many interesting discussions were held as the session progressed and people realised the wide-ranging capabilities of the Hub team and possible synergies with each other’s industry or research goals.

Fruitful discussions continued over lunch, followed by a final session highlighting the Hub’s target Key Performance Indicators. The day concluded with break-out sessions for each research theme, to build on what had been learnt during the day and progress research plans, with several people commenting on how productive the day had been.

Thank you to all Hub members who participated in the highly successful day. We look forward to welcoming you all back again soon!
